Dimensions Newsletter - March 2006

Mission Statement: Visual artists and supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community.

COLLAGE   BY Pat Nix

What does it take to make an Art Exhibit?  First of all, it takes a community of artists who want to show their work.  It takes a place to host the show.  It takes money.  It takes planning and it takes commitment to work on the plan by a group of interested volunteers.

Most of us remember the classic movies with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.  “Hey, guys, why don’t we put on a show?”  Then magically, a few days later, the barn is decorated, everyone has learned their part, the audience fills the room and everyone has a wonderful time. Though it might be fairly easy to put on a neighborhood show in a barn the quality would be questionable and largely a matter of luck.

Sequim Arts has a track record of putting on exceptional, well managed art exhibits.  This year will, hopefully, maintain our standards and reputation.  A smoothly running exhibit depends on volunteers.  The first exhibit coming up is the Student Art Show chaired by Viva Jones, followed quickly by the Juried Exhibit chaired by Carol Eichler.  At the March meeting they will be asking you to join committees to make these shows a success.  Remember, all we need is for each member to do ONE thing for the good of the organization this year.  There are all kinds of jobs, some active, some sitting down.  We have something for everyone, and you have something we need: your participation.

A word or three about other shows:  On March 5th I attended a very nice opening at 5th Avenue for Ruth McNicholas.   The show is called “Visions of Nature” and contains 24 watercolors.  They will be there until the end of March.  Randy and Sallie Radock have a month-long show in uptown Port Townsend which I hope to visit soon.  I hear the opening was quite a success with sales and a large crowd.

March Program:  Suzy Kueckelhan

Collage and mixed media artist, Suzy Kueckelhan, will be demonstrating the use of encaustic and collage.  Encaustic is very hot wax which is applied as paint, used as adhesive for collage, and to create bas-relief and 3-D sculpture.  It is an extremely old technique that is presently going through a resurgence.  Ms. Kueckelhan was our 2005 juror.
