Dimensions Newsletter - April 2006
Mission Statement: Visual artists and
supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community. My April “ART NEWS” arrived this week and has added much pleasure to a busy week. Do you subscribe to an art magazine? There is so much to be learned from a specialty magazine. You find news of world trends and new developments, examples to emulate and museums to dream of visiting. For months I have been following reports of the many people and institutions working to effect the return of Nazi art loot to the families from which it was stolen. This is not an easy job. Private collectors and museums in many countries are involved. Many items have simply disappeared. In other cases barriers to restitution are being erected by the government of the countries where the art is now held. Another great drama surrounds attempts to repatriate illegally excavated or imported artifacts. This is affecting major museums world wide. The Metropolitan Museum has now settled with the Italian government and agreed to return items purchased from a fraudulent dealer in return for the long term loan of artifacts of equal value. However, a Getty curator is still awaiting trial in Italy for allegedly arranging illegal importation of items for the Getty collection. I have learned a great deal about problems of authentication of classic works of long dead artists, and of the great number of forgeries that bedevil auction houses and galleries. Last month, there was an article about lesser works of 19th and early 20th century European art that had been enhanced to mimic well known Russian artists. The subject was right, the materials authentic, they just needed a few touches and a new signature before going to auction. The April issue has the story of an American Marine officer who has taken on the job of tracking down the looted antiquities from the Iraq Museum in Baghdad, and to expose unscrupulous collectors, dealers and museums in many countries. Remember: By the time you read this, the Student Art Show will be open at the Sequim Museum and Art Center on Cedar Street. See images from the show here. APRIL MEETING Thursday, April 27, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim Doors open at 9:30 AM and the meeting will start at 10:00 AM.
