Dimensions Newsletter - May 2006

Mission Statement: Visual artists and supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community.

COLLAGE  by Pat Nix  President

What a wonderful, marvelous, arts rich corner of the world we live in.  Looking at my personal calendar, I realize that I am averaging 2 or 3 art shows every week, even then, there are some that I miss.  Three weeks ago, 11 Sequim Arts members attended an organizational meeting of the proposed Clallam Arts Council which would encourage all forms of art expression in the county, with state support and guidance.  Future meetings will be announced and any interested artist should attend.  We were the only attendees from Sequim, and we need to make our presence known in this County organization.

Once again a highlight of the Sequim Irrigation Festival is a Sequim Arts Exhibit during the festivities.  2006 should be our best exhibit ever.  The quality of each exhibit seems to be increasing, and the selection this time proves the point.  We have to compete with the parade itself on Saturday, but it seems that art lovers find us nevertheless.

I hope that all of you are finding time and inspiration to paint or create your own unique art so as to be ready for the many upcoming exhibits.  The Clallam County Fair deadline will be here before we know it and the member’s show in October will not be far behind.

JUST A REMINDER WE NOW HAVE A JUNE MEETING.  The June meeting will be the pot luck.

MAY MEETING

Thursday May 25,

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim

Doors open at 9:30 AM and the meeting will start at 10:00 AM.

The following members will bring snacks for the May meeting: Connie Alexander, Dona Eby, Gloria Magner and Pat Miklos.

May Program:  Billi Torbenson will be demonstrating Sculptured Watercolor Collage.

“Pulp Painting On Handmade Paper Collage” Below is her description of the Demonstration.

“Throughout the centuries paper has been used in a three-dimensional form. Some subjects I paint call to be lifted into that 3rd dimension. Arches watercolor paper is durable enough to take paper sculpting techniques; such as folding, bending, and weaving into low relief design. The effect of light and shadows are important as well as the background colors that showing through the cut paper.  I will show slides of my sculptured paintings and demonstrate the steps of creating a sculptured watercolor painting from conception to completion.”
