Dimensions Newsletter - July/August 2006

Mission Statement: Visual artists and supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community.

COLLAGE by Pat Nix  President

I am thinking of poppies, big flag red poppies, poppies with smooth and ragged petals and wonderful peony style poppies with petals of all sizes and shapes within the outer bowl of petals.  In all we find the big green heart surrounded with a multitude of tiny hair-like stamen that so engages the honey bee.  Poppies on canvas are just as captivating and they are in abundance.

The current show (through July 31) at Gallery at the Fifth features Dee Green, Ryoko Toyama and Linda Zabora.  This is the first group showing for each of the three and they have put together one of the best shows I have seen at the Fifth.  They include many mediums and subjects.  Ryoko has several watercolor studies of leaves and some dreamy watercolor landscapes. She combines portraits in charcoal with watercolor plantscapes.  Linda is showing several pastel ocean scenes and some lovely orange poppies.  She turns to colored pencil to show a grouping of underwater Medusa.  Dee caught my fancy with three florals done in watercolor on silk.  One of them a bright red poppy!!  She has ocean and lake scenes done in watercolor and a child’s portrait done in pastel.  This is a thoroughly enjoyable exhibit by three of our members.

Over the 4th weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting the new gallery in Port Ludlow, The Art Mine.  This gallery is the stuff of dreams.  Fully and generously supported, Director and Curator Eric Swangstu, plans to be THE art destination on the Peninsula.  The collection contains delightful and challenging oils and ceramic sculpture that is amazing.  Several of the gallery’s artists are in the current juried exhibit at Northwind.  The gallery has a three section screen, each 6’x6’, filled with red poppies.  Speaking of Northwind, kudos to Board Member Terry Vogel on her paper sculpture in the exhibit.
